I had my haircut Saturday and as I was leaving, the lady, Lisa Marie of Lisa Marie’s in Folsom, handed me a flyer for the local Host site of Angel Food Ministries here in West St Tammany.

Angel Food Ministries is a not for profit, non-denominational organization working to relieve hunger in the United States by providing food. They are based out of Georgia. There are no applications, no qualifications, and no limits on quantities purchased. You receive a large box of food for $30.00, which includes meats, fresh fruits, vegetables, pastas, and frozen foods. You must order in advance and you must pick up the food on the date specified but it looks like a very good program. This food is not government subsidized. It is not government cheese. I am going to upload the flyer with the January 2008 menu on it as well as other important dates and information.

The Nature Conservancy of Louisiana

I like what the The Nature Conservancy is working on doing. Preserving wild land.
The The Nature Conservancy of Louisiana has several refuges located in St Tammany, First is White Kitchen Preserve 586 acres of Cypress Marsh located near Slidell, at the Junction of Highways 90 and 190. I have never been to White Kitchen, but I have been to the Abita Creek Flatwoods Preserve, and it is a beautiful place. 834 acres of wildlands. Loaded with pine, it is a paradise for deer and turkey and fox. I grew up not far from where it is located, though it did not officially exist then. To get to it, drive east on Highway 435 from Abita and you will see it on your left about 3 – 4 miles. It is before the Abita Golf and Country Club, and adjacent to Money Hill.
Next is the Lake Ramsey Preserve 414 acres accessable from Penn Mill Road located between Covington High School and Goodbee. This also is a beautiful piece of land, loaded with trees.
Lastly in St Tammany Parish, the Nature Conservancy has two preserves not open to the public. A 160 acre tract called Charter Oak that is located on the slopes of the Pearl River and Talisheek Pine Wetlands which is 1500 acres.

Southeast Louisiana Wildlife Refuges

Here is a link to the currently 8 Federal Wildlife Refuges located near St Tammany. Southeast LA Federal Wildlife Refuges with Big Branch Marsh NWR and the Bogue Chitto NWR being the two closest for us.

Did you know? Big Branch is listed as 15,000 acres and the Bogue Chitto as 36,000 acres. Over 50,000 acres of NWR land available for public use within 30 minutes.
