- TAMMANY HUMANE SOCIETY LAUNCHES “SAVE A HEART, SAVE A LIFE” CAMPAIGN
Covington, LA – St. Tammany Humane Society is hoping to win hearts and save hearts in their February campaign to raise the funding they need in order to rescue and treat more heartworm positive dogs.
“A single bite from a single infected mosquito can cause an otherwise healthy dog to develop heartworm disease and potentially die,” explains Interim Director, Dr. Michelle Newfeld.
Prevalent now in all 50 states, heartworm disease occurs when the larvae from an infected mosquito mature into adult worms that lodge in a dog’s heart, lungs, and surrounding blood vessels. Immiticide, an injectable, arsenic-based product kills these worms, and is the sole solution to saving that dog’s life.
“Because of the high, combined costs (app. $600 per dog) of treatment,” Dr. Newfeld continues, “we are only able to admit ONE heartworm positive dog per month into our adoption program. That is why we are devoting all of February to our “Save a Heart, Save a Life” campaign.
“With Valentine’s Day falling in the middle of the month, what more fitting time for compassionate people to honor its symbol than by opening their hearts and helping an animal in need? The more contributions we receive, the more heartworm positive dogs can be taken into our care and treated, and the fewer of them will have to die.”
